This book raises the concept of “Chinese ecocinema” as a new critical paradigm in Chinese film studies. It investigates how Chinese films engage environmental and ecological issues in the active re-imagination of locale, place, and space, focusing on the cinematic traditions of Greater China: mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. It describes mostly individual, independent film initiatives that often stand in opposition to the prevalent cultural climate at the time. Given the enormity of China's ecological challenges, its ecocinematic imagination is necessarily historically situated. Such a cinema can be nothing but a direct reflection on and response to urgent social, historical, cultural, and environmental issues.
