Origins of the Japanese Art of Animating

(p.13) 1 Origins of the Japanese Art of Animating
Frames of Anime

Tze-Yue G. Hu

Hong Kong University Press

This chapter discusses the origins of Japanese art of animating. It highlights some philosophical discourses about language and its processes that have been explored in the West. These projections of philosophical thinking evaluate the limitations of language, in particular, the entrenched mode of direct language both in the written and spoken forms. They serve to advance the premise that the visual functions of animation fulfill a reality, a reality that may not be rational, structured, stable, or even highly visible or audible.
