Abstract
The wealth of Macau was initially linked to trade with Japan. The Portuguese reached Japan in 1543 and the route between Macau and Nagasaki became permanent in 1571. However, the arrival of the Dutch and the English in the early 17th century put an end to this monopoly. They set up factories in Hirado and gave the Tokugawa regime more bargaining power with the Catholics. Trade with China was one of the major projects of the EIC factory in Hirado, but the enterprise failed because of clashes between the Cantonese authorities and the foreigners. When the English departed in 1623, the Dutch and the Portuguese were the only Europeans left in Japan. The Shimabara uprising 1637 - 1638 led to the final expulsion of the Portuguese, which in turn led to the decline of Macau.
