In this chapter we find Sirén travelling to East Asia for the first time. He made a thorough tour of Japan and met some of the important collectors there. They introduced him to Chinese painting of the Southern Song period and this remains one of his favorite periods for the rest of his life. He also visited China briefly. The Japanese sojourn is told in a book published in Swedish: Den Gyllene Paviljongen (The Golden Pavilion in English).
