In the autumn of 1921 Sirén was finally able to go to China for an extended stay. In the beginning he planned to do archaeological excavation and Orvar Karlbeck was doing his best to assist him. In the end, Sirén did not get a chance to excavate and had to be content in acquiring art works through dealers. He travelled widely around China in spite of the politically unstable conditions. He stayed in China and Japan altogether for 15 months surpassing his leave of absence more than once. The result was that he was dismissed from his professorship at the University of Stockholm.
