Military Celebrity in China: The Evolution of ‘Heroic and Model Servicemen’*
This chapter discusses military celebrity, focusing on the social and political significance of the military figures that have been propelled to public prominence. It presents narratives surrounding the five soldier celebrities: Lei Feng, Ouyang Hai, Wang Jie, Xu Honggang, and Ye Aiqun. It also explores the significance of the evolution of the use of military fame. It also examines the Internet commentary on “heroic and model servicemen” in order to demonstrate the diverse popular responses to the Party-state's recent attempts to reconstruct “models” and “heroes” as “celebrities” in a newly liberalized and commercialized public sphere.
