Tibetan Spouse Selection and Marriage

Tibetan Spouse Selection and Marriage

(p.241) 8 Tibetan Spouse Selection and Marriage
Population and Society in Contemporary Tibet

Rong MA

Hong Kong University Press

The basic unit of human society, the family, is established through different patterns of marriage. Mobility in society and social stratification, as well as the human organization networks and models may be analyzed through examining marriage patterns and the formation of family. Marriage and family studies prove to play a large part in the study of sociology as looking into spouse selection patterns implicitly reveals a society's or a community's values and norms. First, the chapter provides relevant information from early writings regarding Tibetan marriages. After which, the chapter concentrates on data derived from the 1988 survey through drawing urban-rural comparisons of Tibetan marriages. Also, the chapter takes on the intermarriage issue as it is rarely included in studies.
