Forgotten Times: Music, Memory, Time, and Space
Forgotten Times: Music, Memory, Time, and Space
The Infernal Affairs trilogy pictures new technologies — from computers and cell phones to the latest in home entertainment. Stereo equipment is spread out before Chan (Tony Leung) and Lau (Andy Lau), and the two take their seats side by side to listen and appreciate the aural subtleties the sound technology can offer to them. With its association with narrative breaks and alienated characters, “Forgotten Times” insists that Infernal Affairs' New Wave connections not be ignored. “Forgotten Times” alludes to both the past and the future. It also connects Lau to both the Marys in his life, and, as revealed in Infernal Affairs II, initiates him into the underworld as a murderer. Even after the carnage that leaves Lau paralyzed in a sanatorium in Infernal Affairs III, “Forgotten Times” emerges from Lau's safe to stop the investigation into his criminal activities within the police force cold. Infernal Affairs fits within Fredric Jameson's definition of the “nostalgia film”. The screening time, infernal chronotopes, and the infernal city are specifically discussed.
