This introductory chapter explains the objective of this book, which is to establish that human discourses in the contemporary world are sites of cultural contest. This book discusses cultural and political issues involved in discourse theory and method, or the meta-discourse, and its implications for transformation of discourse scholarship. It provides a diversity of empirical studies of intricate cultural power practices and processes of struggle, resistance, change, and cooperation in non-Western as well as Western discourses.
