This chapter examines the modifications of Singaporean ethnicity during the 1980s. During this period, the deterritorializing movement of the city-state was replaced by the emergence of identity and reterritorialization of Asian values and modernity. This radical shift indicated that Singapore is capable of managing culture to make it an instrument for maintaining economic competitiveness.
