This chapter examines the structural reasons for Hong Kong's monetary difficulties which began in 1977. It also compares the relative money growth rates in Hong Kong with the money growth rates of its five major trading partners, and finds a systematic tendency for Hong Kong's money supply to grow more rapidly than was consistent with currency stability on a trade-weighted basis.
