Greener Pastures: The New Village Ideal and May Fourth Intellectuals
This chapter explores the impact of the New Village experiment on May Fourth intellectuals and gauges the level of interest in the Village among writers and revolutionaries, conjecturing on the reasons why enthusiasm for the possibilities of such an experiment quickly cooled in May Fourth China. It starts by discussing the New Village Movement in the context of the social engagement of the White Birch School. It then examines Zhou Zuoren and the appeal of the New Village Movement. Zhou's visit to the New Village in Japan left him convinced that it was his duty to launch a similar Xincun yundong (New Village Movement) in China. Its impact on the fledgling Chinese Communist Party is also covered. Furthermore, the legacy of the New Village Movement in China is presented.
