Igreja e Seminário São José (St Joseph's Seminary and Church)
Igreja e Seminário São José (St Joseph's Seminary and Church)
This chapter discusses St Joseph's Seminary and Church, which is a good example of baroque in Macao. The church was built from 1728 to 1758 for the Society of Jesus, who was expelled from Macao in 1762. The chapter focuses on the baroque aspects of the church, from the façade, the dome, the interior, and to the smaller examples of monuments. Allegory is found at the heart of the baroque, as evidenced by a veiled skull on the urn and the figure of Time.
