This chapter discusses the merchants, clerks, and bankers of Hong Kong. This is the first of eleven chapters to look at a certain group of people who were once part of the society in Hong Kong and are now buried in the Hong Kong Cemetery. The merchants were considered to be part of the aristocracy in Hong Kong, and they provided inspiration and served as a touchstone for those in the lower societal ranks. The clerks, on the other hand, worked for the merchant houses, and seemed to combine high living with intense boredom. Finally the bankers were given the privileges of the elite, and some even enjoyed a status that was well above their fellow bank managers in England. This chapter also looks at the lifestyle, outlook, and reputation of the merchants.
