Forgotten Souls

Patricia Lim

Hong Kong University Press

This chapter discusses professionals in Hong Kong, such as newspaper editors, doctors, architects, and lawyers. These four types of professionals moved in and out of the service of the government as needed, but did not enjoy a high status in society. The Medico-Chirurgical Society is a learned society in Hong Kong with the purpose of furthering medical knowledge and was founded in May 1845. The final section of the chapter discusses the illnesses the doctors dealt with and their corresponding responses.
