The First Phase of Fort Building

The First Phase of Fort Building

(p.23) Chapter 3 The First Phase of Fort Building
The Defences of Macau

Richard J. Garrett

Hong Kong University Press

This chapter examines the first phase of fort building in Macau during the seventeenth century. The methods of construction followed the indigenous practice of Southern China and the main building materials were the local stone, granite, and the local earth, which is a sandy material formed by the decomposition of the granite over the millennium. The layout of the forts was relatively simple and they were generally built to resist an attack from the sea. The chapter describes some of the forts in Macau including the Fortress of São Paulo do Monte, the Fort of São Francisco, and the Penha Fort.
