William Mong's success as an intermediary between the business cultures of Hong Kong and Japan can be attributed to three main characteristics: his versatile linguistic skills, cultural awareness, and ability to capitalize on transnational networks. This chapter considers Mong's family background and chronicles his rise to become the “King of Electrical Appliances.” Mong, the son of an ethnic Chinese merchant born in Nagasaki, grew up in Hong Kong as a subject of two empires, Britain and Japan. He went on to receive a rather unusual education in Hong Kong, mainland China, and Japan.
