This chapter discusses the death and legacy of Huang Binhong. Binhong's son offered to give his collection to the state, but it was rejected. In retaliation, Fou Lei readily spoke up on behalf of his close friend, demanding respect for Binhong's widow and family. Lei also insisted that government officials should understand the significance of Binhong's achievements and legacy, which led to the transfer of his collection to the Zhejiang Provincial Museum. The chapter describes Lei's activities after the death of his friend, from his engagement with the new bureaucracy to dealing with the accusations made against him of being a Rightist. It also looks at the suicides of Lei and his wife on September 2, 1966 and the items retrieved from their home. The final portion of the chapter presents the letters Lei wrote to Binhong's widow.
