Maniam is perhaps Malaysia's most prolific English language writer, and this chapter focuses on the symbology and meaning of Hinduism in three of his works: the novels The Return and In a Far Country, and the short story, “The Pelanduk”. In all three, features related to Hinduism such as asceticism, ritual sacrifice, the relationship between the physical home and the spiritual, Oneness with the Absolute (Atman), the natures of illusion and reality and others, are explored, often inflected by psychoanalytical and anthropological theories promoted by scholars such as Rene Girard, Wendy Doniger and James Dicenso.
