The study concludes with a muted applause at the vision of 1Malaysia, a campaign initiated by Malaysia's current Prime Minister, Dato' Sri Mohd. Najib Razak, to eradicate racism. As laudable as this enterprise may be, the study is wary of the possibility that, if successful, it may erase a past shared by the different ethnic and racial groups in Malaysia, one which, despite being fraught with division and suspicion, is nevertheless one that is rich in its various heritages also—one of which is its literature. Literature, in the end, should never be viewed as merely art, but an important historical document that captures the vicissitudes of a nation and the ideological shifts experienced by its people. As such, in pursuing a 1Malaysia, it is imperative that the memory of a shared history is not dissolved, but kept vitally alive, especially in the country's literature.
