Sir Y. K. Pao and Deng Xiaoping both shared the same vision that China would eventually thrive, and the former was resolved to turn Ningbo into a prosperous city. The author's parents re-visited Ningbo in 1984, and they were warmly welcomed by the local government and villagers. The Pao Family Genealogy Records, a collection which contained the details of the Pao ancestors, was stored in a library called Tianyige. It was regarded by Sir Y. K. Pao as a priceless treasure. He also funded the establishment of Ningbo University, and it continued to flourish with the generous support of a number of Ningbonese from overseas. He was actively involved in the construction of a new Ningbo and wished that it could be administered directly by the central government. Due largely to the rapid developments in the city, his dream eventually came true and Ningbo was granted a new status in 1987.
