The author intended to marry Helmut Sohmen. Her parents opposed her decision because he is a foreigner, yet she defied them by marrying Helmut in the end. Not long after their marriage, they gave birth to a daughter named Michele, and the couple decided to live simple lives in Canada. Hearing that Helmut was willing to join the Pao family business, Sir Y.K. Pao was thrilled. Although Sir Y.K. Pao died in 1991, his business empire continued to thrive, and this could largely be ascribed to the efforts of his sons-in-law.
