Sir Y. K. Pao succeeded in acquiring Kowloon Wharf and Wheelock Marden. He gained controlling interests in a number of other companies. He also acted as an unofficial ambassador during the periods of stalemate in Sino-British negotiations. He met Margaret Thatcher several times, and went to great lengths to persuade her into changing her mind. He even met with Reagan, a former US president, and asked him to put in a good word to Margaret Thatcher. His ultimate wish came true when the Sino-British Joint Declaration was signed in 1984. Sir Y. K. Pao's ambition did not stop at shipping and land-based businesses. He considered investing in the airline industry. He challenged the monopoly of Cathay Pacific Airline by purchasing Dragonair.
