Europe and China: A Maturing Relationship?
Europe and China have grown closely together, propelled by trade and economic interdependence. Yet European policies towards China remain by-and-large incoherent and the diverse interests of European countries have so far made it difficult to frame an effective common response to China's rise. Both China and Europe position themselves as active global players, but their mutual engagement has been dampened by a widespread lack of understanding among leaders of how each other's regions work. They are now drawn together by having to address a wide range of common concerns which is bound to require a more concise and sustained mutual engagement.
