Wong began to speak out on the ‘Chinese question’ and partisan politics in a public debate. Later in 1879, he became involved in a clash over the ownership of a laundry between two members of the Chicago’s Chinese colony. Faced with the threat of abduction, he fled to some neighbouring cities for a short while, and returned to Chicago in early 1880. He also attempted to increase the number of ‘Chinese Americans’ in the United States.
